Lead a high-impact practice improving access to justice for vulnerable clients.
Legal Aid ACT is seeking an experienced and values-driven legal leader to head our Early Intervention Practice as an Executive Lawyer (Legal 5). This is a key senior management position, responsible for setting strategic direction, leading a multidisciplinary team and driving high-quality, client-centred legal services across a broad early intervention portfolio.
The Early Intervention Practice currently includes the Domestic & Family Violence Unit, Family Advocacy Support Service, Family Law Duty Service, Health Justice Partnership and Family Dispute Resolution.
You will lead senior lawyers and support staff to deliver high-volume and intensive case management services to disadvantaged and vulnerable people, including victims of family violence, children, older people, First Nations clients, people with disability and people from culturally and linguistically diverse communities.
As an Executive Lawyer, you will:
- Provide visible leadership for your Practice, fostering a collaborative, high-performing and supportive team culture.
- Supervise and mentor lawyers, including senior and junior staff, and oversee workload allocation, quality assurance and performance against KPIs.
- Contribute to Legal Aid ACT’s strategic vision, including participation in the leadership group, internal and external forums and, where required, meetings of the Legal Aid Board.
- Support law reform and systemic advocacy work that advances access to justice for vulnerable clients.
- Occasionally conduct casework and advocacy, primarily to support the development of less experienced practitioners.
This role is ideal for a senior lawyer who wants to step away from managing their own fulltime caseload and move into a primarily leadership and management-focused position, while still contributing to complex and meaningful legal casework.
What we offer
The opportunity to shape an organisation-wide early intervention strategy and innovate service delivery for vulnerable communities.
- A supportive, collegial environment that encourages rotation, professional development and reflective supervision.
- A strong focus on wellbeing, including recognition of the importance of self-care in high-pressure legal practice.
