Legal Aid ACT lawyers attend ACT public colleges once a fortnight toLawyers in Colleges Program 2022 provide college students and their families with free and confidential legal advice, assistance and information. Our lawyers will also refer you to other services if needed. 

We are a confidential legal service, and we will not take any action without your consent first. We will also not share any information about you legal matter with third parties without your consent first. This means we do not share information with the school staff, child and health services or your parents. You do not need permission from your parents to speak to us. 

 

How the College Lawyer can help you

The lawyer provides free and confidential legal help to students and their families. The lawyer may be able to:

  • Give you general legal information so that you understand your rights and responsibilities.
  • Give you advice about specific legal issues so that you know your options and the best steps forward.
  • Help you by negotiating, drafting letters or preparing for court.
  • Appear on your behalf in mediations and court.
  • Refer  you to non-legal community and support services.

The lawyer can help students across a range of legal areas including family violence, moving out of home and renting, Centrelink issues, family violence and protection orders (PPOs and FVOs), family law, police matters and criminal law, employment law, driving and traffic matters, Care and Protection involvement (CYPS), debt and fines and reporting crimes to the police.

The lawyer can also help students to understand the laws around drugs and alcohol, sex and consent, and their rights when interacting with police.

If you are a college student, to speak to the college lawyer, drop in to their office located on campus at your college during school hours on the day that they attend your college as follows:

  • Hawker College: alternate Mondays
  • Melba Copland College: Alternate Tuesdays
  • Erindale College: Alternate Tuesdays
  • Gungahlin College: Alternate Wednesdays
  • Dickson College: Alternate Wednesdays
  • Lake Ginninderra College: Alternate Thursdays
  • Narrabundah College: Alternate Fridays
  • Canberra College and CC Cares: Alternate Fridays.

Please note that only students can ‘drop in’ without an appointment. Family members who would like free legal advice from the lawyer must make an appointment first by.
